Deregulator manual

Basics.

For the very beginning get familiar with used terminology. We denote terms to speak the same language, because it’s high chance that you’re used these names for something different.

“Echo” in our case – effect like a classic delay pedal with the values for delay and feedback, such probably everyone has seen or used byself with a guitar, fed him a note and it fades evenly like an echo in a cave.

But “Delay” in our case – literally the repeating module, adopts the delay parameter of the “Echo” and repeats everything without fading it, without feedback.

“Reverb” is quite normal, with parameters of the room, damping, damping frequency and the wetness.

In interface Echo/Delay (E/D) part is coloured in warm tones, Reverb is cold blue and “Sends” are greeny ones.

Interface.

The sound is routed quite simple – from top to down. From input it enters the E/D module, next – to the Reverb. All modules can send their output to each other. For this between E/D and Reverb is placed Sends group of sliders.

Almost every slider in app have it’s randomiser brother. Those randomisers are have 2 values – minimum and maximum. If the range is presented – randomisation is enabled, if minimum and maximum are equal – generation of new values are turned off. In first version of the app the min and max values has different sliders and switch to turn it on/off; now Deregulator uses only one combined slider and no need in switches.

As we have deal with feedbacks, on the output is settled “Limiter” to give your ears and equipment a chance to survive in case of everything gets out of control. Slider for Limiter is placed in Settings view.

All controls are grouped in 2 views on iPad – sliders and settings.

And in 4 views on iPhone – E/D, Sends/Reverb, Randomizers and Settings views. You just swipe between them.

Settings.

Tap on Deregulator’s happy face to open view with Settings on iPad or swipe to bottom right part of the interface on iPhone.
Here you can randomise whole effect with “MessAll” button.

Reset audio engine in case of unwanted behavior.
Launch intro sliders with basics of usage and jump to ashshaosh.ru site (www button).
With subdiv.Chopper you can bring some logic in generated random speeds values make them all even or odd.
You can constantly move randomisers with jittRandomisers option to bring instability in effect, give him to alive and dance.
I not promise you absolutely Mono, but you can try to enable it if you need more synchronous left and right channels.
Save the state of effect to your collection.
Start or stop the Recording on performed audio.

Below this controls is placed 3 tabs to switch between collections of Presets, Recordings and MIDI setups. You can have many of them and every slider can be set to different MIDI channels. Recordings can be shared via iTunes, pasteboard copy and sent to AudioShare app. All your presets you’ll find in folder via iTunes share, in collection you can delete and rename selected.
If you are connected to IAA in Settings you also find Host transport buttons.

 

Every slider clarification.

At first let’s look at every control skipping randomizers.

Input* – Volume of input from microphone or connected apps.

Output* – Volume on output from Deregulator.

Right and Left delay – delay for Echo and Delay in milliseconds.

Limit** – Top limit for delay randomizer.

Speed** – Speed of breeding of new delay values. If it = 0 no randomisation happened and you can set delay manually.

Limit tempo* – Speed of birth new Limit value in bpm.

Speed tempo* – the same for Speed value.

Mode Delay/Echo – part of Delay vs Echo in mix. If = 100% – only Delay is in go further without Echo, if it’s zero E/D output only Echo.

Clean – volume of non-affected sound from E/D to Reverb module. If it’s 100% – E/D module excluded from chain and in work only Reverb.

Left and Right feedback – Echo feedback in stereo panning. Manually you can set it up to 111%, obviously it’s leads to feedback loop and Limiter suppression. While randomiser enabled you can bring over 100% values sometimes and prolong the creation of new repeats.

Echo to Delay, Delay to Echo, Reverb to Delay, Reverb to Echo is Send sliders. Rise certain to perform complex feedback. Sent Reverb to E/D is always 100% wet, no matter how Wet slider is set up. You can exclude Reverb module from output (wet=0), but you can still send some Reverb to feed E/D module and hear it indirectly.

Room size – Abstract room space.

Damping – Reflections suppression.

Damping frequency – Focusing frequency of suppression.

Wet – affected by reverberator sound in output.

* sliders are have not randomisers.
** is actually are randomizers, but additionally they have its own randomizers.

Now just notice that all this sliders have one handle to set value.
Randomisers are the two handled ones and as was said above while they present some range – min and max are not equal – randomisation is enabled.
Sends randomiser have its minimum value is always at zero, because of destructive danger of uncontrollable feedbacks. If you don’t hear anything it’s probably Limiter is save your life and damp outputs.
Try to be gently with feedbacks and sends and they pay you back with beautiful echoes.

About clicks.

Sometimes you can hear click. The cause of it is Delay module. It roughly chopping its input and these pieces have sharp edges. You can use it in your music to bring glitchy percussion or can get rid of them. Clicks are more common with long pads or synths passages, vocals and similar sources. Set Mode slider to zero and Delay would be excluded from main chain. You still can bring it back with Sends, but if clicks is still there – set Delay to Echo slider to zero and Delay results will haven’t way to show.

Midi.

You can configure the management of processor with a external controllers.
To do so open MIDI setup tab and set needed controllers to needed channels. On top of this tab is placed buttons to Save your setup and Show collection of saved. To be sure in selected settings use test receiver on bottom of the view. It live demonstrates received channel and MIDI controllers ID.
Deregulator is ready to receive MIDI data from several controllers on network. To set all controllers to the same channel or even ID it have special selectors, don’t need to walk through every selector manually.

Audiobus and Inter-App Audio.

Deregulator can be used with other apps. Supported all slots in Audiobus, and IAA as fx slot.
Keep in mind that sometimes it’s important to launch all apps before connect them with IAA.

Dangers.

Despite the availability of Limiter there’s always chance to get feedback loop. Be wise in your decisions and everything will be good. Think about why I mentioned several times about feedback.
